Thoughts about “New Beginnings”

This series is inspired by the spirit of starting something new. Euphoria, hope, energy, expectations…but also fear and uncertainty. We all know these feelings when we are at the beginning of something unknown, don’t we? For this series two beautiful pieces of words inspired me. The first one is a song by Nick Cave, an artist I truly admire. It’s called “A New Morning”

One morn I awakened
A new sun was shining
The sky was a Kingdom
All covered in blood
The moon and the stars
Were the troops that lay conquered
Like fruit left to wither
Poor spiritual food

And the spears of the bright sun
All brave with its conquest
Did hover unearthly
In banners of fire
I knelt in the garden
Awash with the dawning
And a voice came so brightly
I covered my eyes

Thank you for giving
This bright new morning
So steeped seemed the evening
In darkness and blood
There’ll be no sadness
There’ll be no sorrow
There’ll be no road too narrow
There’ll be a new day
And it’s today
For us

The song is from the album “Tender Prey” (1988) and expresses the relief and the thankfulness after a period of long darkness or depression. You literally can feel the hope and the relief of this new morning – more like a prayer than a poem or a song. Just beautiful!

go all the way

New beginnings are not only about hope and relief, mostly they are about courage and the fact that you have to overcome fear to start something new. You have to deal with the consequences the new and the unknown might bring – perfectly expressed by the following poem by Charles Bukowski. It's called "Roll The Dice"

if you’re going to try, go all the way.
otherwise, don’t even start.

if you’re going to try, go all the way.
this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.

go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or 4 days.
it could mean freezing on a park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.

isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of how much you really want to
do it.
and you’ll do it
despite rejection and the worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.

if you’re going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.

do it, do it, do it.
do it.

all the way
all the way.

you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter, its
the only good fight
there is.

...it just needs a little bit of courage
